Maritime Training Package (TDM07)
As advised in the previous Newsletter, the review will initially consider near coastal qualifications in addition to Engineer Watchkeeper, Ratings Pathways and issues such as the development of a qualification for Marine Surveyors and Marine Pilots . The need for a qualification for VTIS operators has been raised and this issue will also be considered.
To this end a number of Steering Committees have been set up with associated Technical Reference Groups to cover various sectors of the industry, such as Deck, Engineering, Ratings and Other. The "Other" group refers to such issues as the development of a Marine Surveyor qualification, Marine Pilot qualification and a study on the need for a VTIS qualification.
Because of the diverse nature of the maritime industry, the Deck area has been further subdivided to Offshore, Tourism, Ferries and Diving and Fishing and Aquaculture.
It is hoped that all stakeholders have been considered in the consultative process , but if you feel you are not included please do not hesitate to contact me.
A number of drafts of the proposals for the establishment of a Cert I Deck Hand, Cert II Limited Coxswain and Cert II Coxswain have been distributed for comment and I am grateful for responses received so far. I am hopeful that Draft 4 will allow agreement on the units to be included in each qualification so that the units themselves can either be written where required or reviewed.
The more input that is received the better so please let me have your comments.
Close cooperation with AMSA continues to ensure that the revised Maritime Training Package will properly reflect regulatory needs as well as meeting Stakeholder requirements.
