About Competency Standards
Competency Standards are the foundation for competency based training programs are based.
Competency standards provide an industry benchmark for training and assessment. They specify the scope of knowledge and skills to be covered by each Industry Qualification. They enable enterprises to accurately define particular roles within industry, and are a useful guide when designing job classifications, workplace appraisal, and skill development. They are the basis for designing vocational education and training courses and assessment strategies.
THE COMPONENTS OF COMPETENCY STANDARDS
UNIT CODE | Unit codes are assigned when the Training Package is endorsed or when new units of competency are added to an existing endorsed Training Package. |
UNIT DESCRIPTOR | Unit descriptor provides sufficient information to clarify the unit title and the relationship with other industry units. |
EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS | Employability skills at the qualification level are the broad expectations with regards to employability skills for each qualification. At the unit level, employability skills are embedded in the Elements, Performance Criteria, Range Statement and Evidence Guide. |
APPLICATIONS OF THE UNIT | The application of the unit fleshes out the scope, purpose and operation of the unit of competency in different contexts - for example its application in the workplace. |
ELEMENTS | Elements describe the essential outcomes of a unit of competency. |
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA | Performance criteria describe the required level of performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Assessment of performance is to be consistent with the evidence guide. |
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE | This describes the essential knowledge and skills and their level required for this unit. |
RANGE STATEMENT | The range statement relates to the unit of competency as a whole. It allows for different work environments and situations that may affect performance. |
EVIDENCE GUIDE | The evidence guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the performance criteria, required knowledge and skills, the range statement and the assessment guidelines for this Training Package. |
